The "Microsoft" Phone Scam
A retired couple received a call from someone claiming to be Microsoft support. The caller talked them into installing remote access software and had control of the computer for 45 minutes. We removed three remote access trojans, a keylogger, and cleaned out browser-saved passwords. We helped them change passwords on banking, email, and social media accounts and set up proper antivirus protection.
Ransomware on a Family PC
A teenager downloaded a cracked game installer that encrypted the family's documents, photos, and school files. The ransom demanded $500 in Bitcoin.
